Sharing the Planet
An inquiry into the rights and responsibilities in the struggle to share finite resources with other people and with other living things; communities and the relationships within and between them; access to equal opportunities; peace and conflict resolution.
Grade 5 will be going on a field trip this Sunday to see some rural villages in Dhaka. Please remember to bring your lunch, hat, water bottle and a camera (if you have one). On this trip, we want everyone to take notes and pictures of what we observe. Remember to think about details and record that data as well. Think about our transdiciplinary theme in bold face above when making comments related to before and after our field trip.
What evidence did you see?
What connections can you make to our theme?
Click here to view an Exhibition resource. You can begin to post comments now about what you think the transdisciplinary theme means to you personally. Share your thinking with your friends in 5K and 5C too!

Caio,
Can you please explain your thinking more clearly about “cow poo” ? How can this “cow poo” be used for cooking and how can someone use this type of fuel for driving a car? Also, when you comment on a post, you will want to make sure what you have written is ready for viewing because this is a published piece of writing. Please review the section on our blog called “Tech Tips” for guidelines for creating a post. You might want to give your comment another go.
Keep thinking,
Mrs. E

I think it is really cool how the water pumps work. I think they should build more so more people have a easy access to clean drinking water.

Prabhat,
Please explain your thinking about the water pump and clean drinking water. What do you believe is in the water you saw today? How can this water actually become more pure and clean? What can you do to take action and help create cleaner water for Dhaka city dwellers that is safe to ingest? How do you think people can have better access to cleaner water in this country? Please add more to your comment and give it another go.
Keep thinking,
Mrs. E

I think this water is okay but not as clean because maybe it still has some dirt in it. I think if they heated this water it would be okay to drink because the germs will go. I think if i took action it might be a bake sale and the money will go to making more water pumps so more people can have clean water. If i do have this bake sale and make more water pumps I know the villagers will be happy.

Prabhat,
I read your latest post and you are starting to think more critically. Well done explaining what issue you observed and how you can take small steps to make a difference in this world!
Keep thinking and sharing,

The vast and beautiful greenery of the village Gazipur was just amazing! It is really cool about how the rural keep the place green and even the electric powered autos they were all over the place. No pollution in Gazipur!!! The school even had a lot of children!!! I even noticed that some people were walking and stoped and looked at us and others just minded there own buisness. People are even so kind to chat and answer back when a question is asked!
It is such a peacful life that I wish I could just come and stay in Gazipur!!!!!
P.S.- Another thing that I noticed is that people don’t even need a mall to shop they just shop at those small shops. I barely saw any resturants only the one where Mrs. Elliott bought the singaras.

Anomitra,
You have made quite a few observations from today’s field trip! You also elaborated in excellent detail about what you observed. I agree that this village is a very peaceful place to live, although there seemed to be very little modern conveniences. I wonder how the people live day to day? Maybe you can go to another village and interview people to understand their lives better. I wonder if other villages are similar to this one? There was little pollution in Gazipur and I wonder if all villages in Bangladesh have those electric cars. We should think about doing a survey and some research to find out.
Keep thinking,
Mrs. E

I think people in the villages struggle a lot from day to day to get some money. I even remember the furniture store where the workers made the furniture hand made.
I don’t think that other villages are like Gazipur because Gazipur looked kind of like a rich village with all those electrical autos! Other villages could be much more poor than Gazipur!

Maybe we should check out some other villages and compare them to the one we were taken to today. What do you think? If enough people are interested, I can arrange another village tour some time.

Anomitra,
We will see what can be done, but if you are in town over fall break, you can check out another village, compare the two villages and report back to the class your findings.

Gazipur is almost filled with nature. There are so many animals and so many trees. Gazipur is nothing like Dhaka because it is really quiet there and Dhaka is too noisy. I didn’t see too many people. When we were walking in the streets it was shady and cool, but not a lot of people . It made it quiet and easy to get around.

Areeb,
I do agree with you that Gazipur is a peaceful area brimming with natural beauty! There were few negative issues about this particular village. It was a lovely get away from Dhaka city. How do you think developers and builders can bring a touch of this natural beauty and refreshment to the city? It would be interesting to start to think about in greater detail.

I also think it is cool how the people in the vilages are so peacful. Comparde to Dhaka City, villages are more peacful. But here in Dhaka there are some positives like there are more shops to buy, but one negative thing is that here it has more traffic and more airpolution. But I still like living here in Dhaka City!!

Maya,
Yes, there are both positives and negatives about the village and the city. The city does have quite a lot of pollution and traffic. Knowing this, what type of action do you think you might be able to take to help with this issue and make it a little better?

Well I think we could walk a bit more, like I have a short distance to the school so I walk and not use the car. And also maybe the traffic lights could be on the color green longer that more cars can go through.

Caio,
You were more thorough with your second explanation. Remember when you post something, it will be made public and you will want to make sure what you write is on topic and aimed at the right target audience. Remember to use punctuation next time you write a comment too.
